Biography

The painter Gunnar Qvist was born in Frederikshavn, but grew up in Skagen. Has since adolescence lived in Copenhagen.

His artistic debut was Gunnar Qvist even as a 9-year-old when he won a local painting competition with a gloomy picture of the Buried Church in Skagen. Gunnar Qvist had as a child his time with the painter Max Reese and received much encouragement and graphical teaching.

Later lived painter George von Rantzau with the family for a season, and during this period, Gunnar Qvist daily contact with diligent and colorful paint. The teens had Gunnar Qvist his time with painters Ancher Kjaer and Henrik Nielsen, who had a studio in Tuxen's Villa in Skagen.

Gunnar Qvist is virtually self-taught, but has taken courses in drawing and color theory. Gunnar Qvist was inspired by countless visits to museums and galleries both at home and abroad, and painter colourist, cheerful mood and fantasy images with successive colors in the flickering light, and expresses a positive attitude to life and a great optimism. Gunnar Qvist has also painted a number of non-figurative images inspired by the Old Testament.
